Tawfiq Amin Zayyad was born in Nazareth on 7 May 1929. He studied at the Municipal High School in Nazareth, then left for Moscow to study literature. He served as mayor of Nazareth for three electoral terms, and was a Knesset member for 6 electoral cycles for the Israeli Communist Party, then for the Communist Party's new list, and later for the Democratic Front for Peace and Equality. He was known as a poet and political writer and is one of the most important poets who founded the Palestinian poetry movement after the 1948 Nakba.
