BIOGRAPHY

Janet Nikola Mikhael was born in Ramallah in 1942. She attended elementary school in Ramallah Amiriya Girls' School and graduated from secondary school in 1959. She obtained a diploma in science from the Education Faculty at the Dar al-Mualimat College in Ramallah in 1961, and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from George Fox University in the United States of America (USA) in 1973. She worked as a teacher at the Ramallah Secondary Girls School in 1961 and became its principal from 1985 to 2003. She also served as an education consultant in the Ministry of Education from 2003 to 2005. She was the lead candidate of the "Ramallah for All" slate for the Ramallah municipal elections, and won the mayoralty in 2005, becoming the first woman to head a municipality in Palestine.

DESCRIPTION

The Janet Mikhael Collection encompasses a set of photographs documenting her journey in the field of education since the 1950s in Palestine, especially in Ramallah. Since she was the principal of the Ramallah Girls' Secondary School, the photographs document the stages of and changes in the social landscape and spatial space over the decades. They also document some of Mikhael's achievements, such as serving as a municipal mayor and her impact at that stage as the first Palestinian woman to hold this position.
