Omar and Nael al-Barghouthi are two freedom fighters from Kobar village, located in Ramallah district. Nael al-Barghouthi was arrested in 1978 on the background of a commando operation, and sentenced to life imprisonment. In 2011, he was released as part of "Wafaa al-Ahrar" prisoner swap deal, only to be rearrested three years later. He is considered the oldest political prisoner in the world. As for his brother, Omar, he was intermittently arrested for more than 26 years in total. Omar's son, Saleh, was murdered in 2019, and his other son, Asem, is currently serving a life sentence for carrying out a commando operation following the death of his brother.
show more show lessThe Omar and Nael al-Barghouthi Collection is an archival collection that documents the social history of Palestinians through the al-Barghouthi family in Kobar village, located in Ramallah district. It contains photographs of the two brothers as well as of other prisoners in the Israeli Occupation prisons, in addition to documents including letters sent from prisons via the Red Cross, postcards, greeting cards, newspaper clippings, and school certificates. It also features a notebook belonging to Omar al-Barghouthi, in which he recorded the poems he composed while in prison during the period from 1982 to 1993.
