Taken in 2000, this colour photograph captures the stage where al-Midan Theatre produced its theatrical performance "Sayyedat al-Bayt [Lady of the House]". Written by Spanish poet García Lorca and directed by Munir Bakry, the play, originally entitled "The House of Bernarda Alba", tells the story of domineering matriarch Bernarda Alba who upon the death of her second husband imposes an eight-year mourning period on her household in accordance with her family tradition. Bernarda has five daughters, aged between 20 and 39, whom she has controlled inexorably and prohibited from any form of relationship.
