A Video of ASHTAR Theatre's Performance of "Makina Wa Shakush"
A video clip documenting the performance of "Makina Wa Shakush" [Machine and Hammer], a play produced by ASHTAR Theatre which tackles a collection of cases and asks questions about the situation of labourers in Palestine. The play aims to have the audience take the role of the actors and interfere on stage, fill in the void and suggest solutions. "Makina Wa Shakush" tells the story of a group of characters: Abu Safi, a labourer who worked as a carpenter for seven consecutive years in a number of Palestinian establishments. One day, he finds himself jobless and with no compensation or minimum rights. Abu Safi works in interrupted periods of time in different work situations, which causes economic hardships on him and his family. How would you help abu Safi handle the situation? What are his rights? Who is the employer? Samir is a young man who works at his relative's workshop. He gets into a car accident and is physically injured. What is the role of an insurance company in covering the expenses of Samir's recovery? What are Samir's employer's responsibilities toward him? What is the role of trade unions in defending Samir's rights? Abu Fo'ad is the owner of a tailor shop, employing a group of female and male employees. Does Fo'ad follow the Palestinian Labour Law toward his employees? Are all Palestinian employees aware of their rights in the Palestinian Labour Law? Who will ensure that the law is implemented in Palestinian establishments?
