Diaries of Khalil Sakakini, 3 January 1940
Handwritten, this archival item documents the diaries of Khalil Sakakini on Tuesday 3 January 1940, where he inaugurated his diary by mentioning that he, his sister Millia, his cousin Hanneh, Najla, and daughters; Dummia and Hala visited the cemetery and scattered some flowers, he also mentioned the visit o Saliba al-Jawouzi where they discussed several topics such as how diverse people are in the beauty, nobility and ethics; as there might be a musician whose father is a construction worker or a poet whose father is a water delivery man and so on. Then, they spoke about how citizens of the village try to copy the citizens of the city; as such socialization might cause a stereotypical concept; like the friendship between a villager and an alcoholic from the city, then, this manner is typically generalized. On the other hand, they spoke about four roles of which people go through; the first is how proud they were of their shameless actions, the second is how shy they are because of them, the third is their alleged intent of honour, while the fourth is how important the ethics are, and honour becoming a moral constitution. In this diary, he also mentioned the visit of Goerge Antonious who came yesterday from Beirut to comfort him and receiving a condolences letter from Haj Amin Afndi al-Hussaini from Baghdad which was signed by Muhammad Amin Salah. On the same page, Assakakini wrote the continuation of his previous diary dated Monday 2 January 1940.
