A letter From the British Consulate-General to Anwar Nusseibeh, Jerusalem, 29 October 1959

Printed in English, this archival item documents a letter from Her Majesty’s Vice Council “W.H. Harper” at the British Consulate-General in Jerusalem to Anwar Nusseibeh, sent on 29 October 1959, where he expresses his gratitude towards his intensive demonstration to several points of the Jordan Law contain in Nusseibeh’s previously sent letter on 16 October 1959, where, it is clear that a civil marriage celebrated outside Jordan, reference must be made to the appropriate Ecclesiastical authorities if there is any doubt in their validity in the Jordan Law, and the cases which tickled my curiosity were about a Muslim Young man married a British Christian young woman at a registration office, while the second was about a Britain’s born woman got married, in accordance to the rites of the Catholic Roman Church in Jerusalem in 1944; to a man who was born in Bethlehem in 1880 who became naturalized British Subject in 1920.  In 1957 he acquired the Jordanian nationality by naturalization and subsequently renounced his British nationality in 1958, therefore, after reading Nusseibeh’s letter, he assumed that the wife gained her Jordanian citizenship when her husband received his naturalization in 1957, once done, she became a dual national; since under the United Kingdom Law the only method to make her renounce her British nationality is by taking an audacious decision to stand before a British official has the power to approve this kind of renunciation, therefore, she gives up her British nationality once the renunciation date issued by Secretary of State for the Home Department is effective in London.
