Abdel-Rahman al-Haj Ibrahim Diaries, Tulkarm, 1932

Handwritten between 1 January and 31 December 1932, this document shows the diaries of Abdel-Rahman al-Haj Ibrahim for the year 1932, where he detailed his family and social life as the mayor of Tulkarm. According to their subject, the diaries were divided into three sections, where al-Haj Ibrahim recorded the most important activities. For one, he wrote about his ownership of the Faza orchard on the seashore near the city of Tulkarm and the village of Umm Khaled, where he recorded hiring a Jewish worker to upgrade the orchard, water and graft the trees, supervise the process of planting reeds and grafting grapefruits. He also wrote about the most important social activities he carried out, such as registering his children in kindergarten and performing rain prayers, in addition to visiting several Palestinian cities, towns, and villages, including Haifa, Yafa, Jerusalem, al-Karmil, Wadi al-Hawarith, Jenin, Bisan, Tiberias, al-Kafir, Samakh, Kfar Saba, and al-Taybeh, as well as notes from his medical retreat to the al-Himmeh area. At the top of some pages, al-Hajj Ibrahim wrote a description of his health and his keenness to set up iftar tables during Ramadan for different social groups. Al-Haj Ibrahim wrote down the days when he went to do business in the municipality of Tulkarem, and his attendance at the meetings of the municipal council, road, education, city cleaning and scouts committees. In these diaries, he focused on tenders for municipal contractors, mice control in the city and discussing the process of building a new school next to the girls’ school.
