The Sling of Shaheed Faris Odeh Displayed at the '100 Shaheed - 100 Lives' Exhibition, Feb 2001
Taken by photographer Isabel de la Cruz, this photograph shows the sling that belonged to Shaheed Faris Odeh from al-Zaytun Quarter, Gaza. Odeh became famous for his iconic photo, in which he stands defiantly in front of an Israeli tank, gripping a stone. On November 8th, 2000, he left his home early and made his way to the confrontation area, where he threw stones at the military forces. Though they attempted to capture him, he managed to evade them, but they killed him after shooting him in the neck. This item was displayed at the '100 Shaheed - 100 Lives' exhibition, held at the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Center in Ramallah on February 20, 2001. The idea of the exhibition emerged weeks after the eruption of the Second Intifada (Al-Aqsa Intifada) as a tribute to all those murdered in the struggle. However, as the number of Shaheeds was exponentially increasing, the exhibition was limited to honoring the first 100 Shaheeds representing all areas of Historic Palestine.
