Issue 38 of Al-Shiraa Magazine, March 1982
Published in March 1982, this is the thirty-eighth issue of Al-Shiraa (The Sail) magazine. Siham al-ʿasaly is the senior editor and Adnan az-Zubaydy is in charge of the illustrations and fonts. Printed in the Arab Orient Press in al-Quds (Jerusalem), the magazine explores a variety of issues under the following sections, Palestinian affairs, Arab affairs, International affairs, Palestinian features, literature, and Israeli affairs. The 68-page issue tackles these subjects through the following: - The Palestinian affairs section includes the articles “The Symbols of Conspiracy Emerge Again,” “The Possible Outcomes of the Situation on the Lebanese Borders” which both discuss the issue of a political settlement in the Middle East and the role of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United States in bringing it about. The articles also discuss the involvement of new regimes like the Romanian regime and how that relates to the 1982 Israeli Occupation of Lebanon, peace settlements, and political events in the region like the withdrawal from Sinai and the Iran-Iraq war. Another article in this section is “The New Dependency” by ʿĀdel Samara which comments on the crisis of Arab bourgeoises and offers examples of economic dependency in Arab countries. The section also includes an assortment of Palestinian local news. - The Arab affairs section includes the article “Lebanon and Israel” on Philip Habib’s tour, Fahd’s initiative, and Reagan’s peace plan in the Middle East. The article “Libya in the Face of American Provocation” discusses the claim of the Gulf of Sidra as part of International Waters to lead Libya into starting a war. - The international affairs section includes the articles “The Palestinian Attempts during the Visit Were in Vain” on the visit of the French president, François Mitterrand, to Israel and the position of France on the Cause of Palestine. “A Cultural Revolution in Ghana?” on the presidency of Jerry Rawlings and the establishment of popular committees and a National Arbitration Committee in Ghana and the rejection of the meddling of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). “The Soviet Union Will Not Seize Control of Arab Oil Fields” which is an American study. - The Palestinian features section includes the following stories, “Strawberry Farmers in the Gaza Strip: A Steadfastness Symbol or for Familial Gain” on how the family of Abu Halima took over a local society. Another story reports on activities of the Education and Social Services Institute which is under the management of Dar Al-Tifel Al-Arabi in al-Quds (Jerusalem) and there is a story on the Union of Workers and Employees of Makassed Hospital. - The Israeli affairs section includes the article “The Solution Forced on Palestinians Will Be an Utter Failure” on the implementation of self-governance in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, the article “The Recent Events and the Knesset,” and a number of Israeli news reports. - The literature section includes literary criticism, stories, and poetry.
